Cheltenham 3.00 – The Butcher Said (5/1) – 3pts win

Olly Murphy’s progressive six-year-old looks thrown in for his handicap debut off the back of an excellent seasonal reappearance run over this course and distance last month at the Showcase meeting. He finished second to Ramses De Teillee there but was conceding that 146-rated runner 8lbs. That strongly suggests his mark of 136 today is exploitable and given he went from strength to strength last season when running up a four-win sequence, he has huge scope for progress now on his second start of this campaign, and now that he is proven on both soft ground and over three miles.

The Butcher Said.jpgCheltenham 1.50 – Big River (4/1) – 2pts win

Lucinda Russell could well have Big River primed for a huge run in today’s marathon BetVictor Smartcards Handicap Chase, run over three miles and three and a half furlongs. He showed on both of his previous runs – fifth in the Scottish National and fourth in the Ultima Handicap Chase – that he has the stamina to go well in a race like this. It’s also worth noting that he goes very well fresh, his form figures when coming off a break read 2121F4 and today is his first run since undergoing a wind operation. A lightly-raced chaser, he is proven on this sort of going, so everything looks in place for a big run.

Punchestown 1.25 – Eclair De Beaufeu (4/1) – 1pt win

Eclair De Beaufeu has to reverse form with Notebook in the Grade 2 Craddockstown Novice Chase today at Punchestown but he looks value to do so. Having come off just second best in a tight battler with Henry de Bromhead’s gelding over this course and distance, this five-year-old showed clearly he had progressed from that experience when bolting up in a useful contest at Wexford. He produced a smart performance on the clock there and should have more to offer on his return to Punchestown today.

Punchestown 3.10 – Treacysenniscorthy (5/1) – 1pt win

A little disappointing when a beaten favourite at Tipperary on his previous run, Treacysenniscorthy could be worth another go today. He’s a lightly raced horses open to further progress and remains potentially very well treated off a hurdles mark of 102 on the form of his beginners chase win at Listowel, where he got the better of some likely much higher rated types.

Cheltenham 12:05 – Dancing On My Own (11/2) – 1pt win

It’s interesting that Henry de Bromhead has elected to send Dancing On My Own over to Cheltenham today for the opening Grade 2 on the card. This second season novice hurdler has some notable form with the likes of Klassical Dream last season and though his form tailed off, he looked back in business when bolting up at Wexford last month. He has a rating of 141 and if he is able to run close to that, it puts him in with a big chance, because the favourite Thyme Hill, impressive though he was in the Persian War, has to concede 5lbs to him here.

1.50 Cheltenham – Achille 8/1 – 1 Pt E/W

A fine progressive grey horse who enjoyed an excellent season last year. He starts off his campaign with a demanding test but this should be right up his street – with stamina being his forte. Hopefully should go close at a price.

2.25 Cheltenham – Guitar Pete 16/1 – 1 Pt EW
An admirable veteran at this stage who saves his best work for these C&D Handicaps. I feel he’s sneaking under the radar here in what seems like an open race, and with most bookies paying out 6 places, he is worth a punt.

3.00 Cheltenham – Anteros 10/1 – 1 Pt E/W
A horse that seems to come alive in this race every year, winning it and coming a close 2nd the year after. His confidence will have been boosted by some recent chase wins and the forecast heavy ground will be of no issue to him.

12.50 Punchestown – Faugheen 5/4 – 2 Pt Win
What a horse this is. There’s not much to say about him that hasn’t already been said. This is a bit of a heart over head tip. However, if he takes to the game then in theory he should win this quite costly. Fingers crossed.
