Real Madrid host Ajax in tonight’s last 16 Champions League second leg encounter. The Spanish giants take home a 2-1 lead from their trip to Amsterdam three weeks ago.
Los Blancos are aiming to win their fourth Champions League trophy in as many years. Back in 2017, Europe’s top footballing prize had never been won by the same team consecutively since it’s reformation in 1992.
Unlike recent seasons, Madrid don’t appear to be as imposing this campaign. After losing twice in one week to bitter rivals Barcelona, Real are out of all other competitions and will turn their focus towards securing their fourth consecutive European Cup.
Madrid’s opponents, Ajax, have kept a great account of themselves in Europe this season after going unbeaten throughout the group stages against the formidable Bayern Munich and Benfica. However, it is difficult to envisage an Ajax win at the Bernabéu tonight.
Madrid may be without captain Sergio Ramos, but the 13 time winners are a different beast in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Solari has introduced new faces in to the side such as teenage prodigy Vinícius Júnior in attack, and left back Sergio Reguilón who has recently kept Marcelo out of the team.
Although Madrid are 2-1 ahead in the tie with important away goals secured, they will show no mercy from the first whistle tonight in what should be a very comfortable home win.
