Guineas weekend at Newmarket traditionally signifies the return of the flat season quickly followed by a sunny Chester in the north wetting our appetite for whats to come in the summer months.
On Saturday Churchill now 5/1 for the Epsom Derby gave Aiden O’Brien his 8th 2000 Guineas triumph, once again proving Coolmore sire Galileo to be the best daddy in the business.
Reflecting on the 2000 Guineas itself , Barney Roy was deemed to be the unluckiest horse with owner his highness Sheik Mohammad in attendance. He met trouble in running before picking up again to finish second.
It was the French raider however Al Wukair, in the silks of Al Shaqab racing who caught my eye most of all and could end up being the best of this lot going forward. Held up off the pace, Andre Fabres runner had to almost circle the entire field before entering the dip to deliver a challenge, the son of Dream Ahead finished strongest of them all and could still be anything.
It’s the French Derby 4th June next Al Wukair where he’s 3/1 with Paddy Power. Looks fair at this stage with a step up in trip sure to suit.
Chester In The Sun :
One of the more glamorous fixtures on the racing calendar, that said I’m not entirely sure Jose Mourinho will be rushing to allow Manchester United players much free reign to attend Chester Racecourse this year around.
It’s crunch time for the reds facing Celta Vigo on Thursday night but Sir Alex Ferguson along with plenty of ex United representatives will not be breaking tradition with 18 degrees expected and sunshine forecasted at the Cheshire venue.
Cheshire Oaks Listed (1m3f) (Fillies) 14:25:
ALLURINGLY (6/4) steps up in class and trip here coming off the back of a smart winning maiden performance at Tipperary last month.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock proved she handles a sharp turning undulating track simular to what she’ll face tomorrow. Aiden usually sends a decent type over for this, winning it 5 times since 2008 with Somehow winning it last year.
This filly looks the one to beat, market support already.
Chester Cup (2m2f) 15:35 :
Co.Meath man Tony Martin loves the Chester Cup and he hit the cross bar with Quick Jack in 2015. Martin trained Golden Spear appears to be well handicapped, Ryan Moore is on board indicating likely support.
Local Franny Norton knows his way around Chester and a chance is taken on his free rolling grey mount WATERSMEET (10/1) to go close.
Kept going throughout the winter on the AW, the Mark Johnson runner won’t lack for fitness. If he takes to Chester expect him to wind it up in front getting plenty of these in trouble turning for home. Up 5Ibs in the future he looks off an attractive mark tomorrow. Each Way play.
