It’s 2000 Guineas day on the turf at Newmarket featuring three group races including the first classic of the new season the group 1 Qipco 2000 guineas at 15:35.
Ballydoyle have traditionally dominated this fixture with Aiden O’Brien landing the Guineas 7 out of the last 20 runnings. Rock Of Gibraltar, Footstepsinthesand, Henrythenavigator and Camelot are just a few ex-triumphants who have went on from Guineas glory to have stallion careers.
Son of Galileo and Dewhurst winner Churchill carries the hopes of Ballydoyle, Michael Tabor and Aiden O’Brien this time around and was well supported in the market on Thursday.
Six years ago Frankel was arguably the most impressive winner of the Guineas Newmarket has ever seen. Today sees the Juddmont star’s first offspring attempt the same feat as himself with two runners in the feature. It was Martyn Meade’s Frankel Colt EMINENT (7/1) that was the one to catch my attention across the guineas trials.
Although the Craven Stakes hasn’t produced a 2000 Guineas winner since Hafaad in 2004, this fellow could prove abit special. Turning up in the craven only a maiden winner lacking the same experience as the others, he certainly made up for it with ability to land the spoils at Newmarket just 16 days ago. Eminent showed a professional approach coming out of the stalls, enough speed, an ability to handle the dip and he wasn’t stopping at the line.
The Guineas has been a decent trial for the Epsom derby in the past and the way he shaped in the final furlong of the Craven, a tilt at flat racing’s finest prize looks a potential possibility where he’s best price 12/1.
